Currys launches Green Friday initiative to encourage efficient purchases

In a twist on one of the biggest days in the retail calendar – Black Friday, Currys has launched a new Green Friday initiative, which focuses on recycling and energy efficient products.

The move will see the tech retailer waive the usual £30 fee for customers to have their old products picked up and recycled.

The initiative will last until October 31, and will see customers receive a £10 discount when buying selected products in the sale.

The products on offer include around 140 tech savvy home appliances, expanding on the retailers’ sustainability drive through initiatives like its Cash for Trash scheme (where customers get a small cash incentive for recycling electronic goods).

The move comes as research by the retailer reveals that 90% of people consider energy efficiency to be one of the biggest deal-breakers when buying home appliances.

A further 29% of people are switching off all appliances when they aren’t in use in order to help combat rising energy prices.

The products customers are most keen to want to replace with a more efficient option include tumble dryers (32%), ovens (31%) and kettles (29%).

Currys group environment manager David Ville said: “We know e-waste is a growing worry for customers, with 75% of the nation saying they’re concerned about e-waste, this includes anything with plugs, cords and electric components”.

“As such, Currys is committed to helping people make more sustainable decisions when it comes to choosing their home appliances. Our new Green Friday event give some great discount on energy efficient products, helping to reduce at-home power consumption and bills”.

He continued: “Through our ‘long live your tech’ initiative, customers also have access to our tech experts, best-in-class repair capability, as well as our innovative Cash for Trash scheme”.

“With this we can make sure old technology is disposed of our refurbished responsibly, – meaning less tech finds its way to landfill – all in exchange for a £5 voucher towards your next initiative”.
