Scientists warn human activity is warming the planet at record speed

Scientists have warned that the rate at which human activity is warming the planet is at a record high.

The research, carried out by a group of 57 scientists, says that on average global temperatures are rising one quarter of one degree Celsius every decade.

Scientists say the issue of rising temperatures can’t be ignored and are calling for “rapid action” to cut carbon emissions.

The group of 57 scientists from around the world used United Nations-approved methods to examine what was behind last year’s record temperatures and the ongoing warming.

However, the scientists said even with a faster warming rate they do not see evidence of significant acceleration in human-caused climate change beyond increased fossil fuel burning.

“If you look at this world accelerating or going through a big tipping point, things aren’t doing that,” said the study’s lead author Piers Forster, a Leeds University climate scientist.

“Things are increasing in temperature and getting worse in sort of exactly the way we predicted.”

The report said the rise is largely explained by the build-up of carbon dioxide from rising fossil fuel use.

Earlier this year, scientists cautioned that up to half of the Amazon rainforest could hit a tipping point by 2050, due to water stress, land clearance and climate disruption.
