Ride-hailing app Freenow is the latest firm to have its greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions reduction targets validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).
Freenow, which allows passengers to book a cab via smartphone, says it is making strides towards becoming a net zero platform and is committed to focusing on reducing GHG emissions.
By 2030, the company commits to reduce the indirect GHG emissions associated with the generation of electricity, heat, or steam that it buys or consumes by 42% from a 2021 base year.
It is also pledging to reduce GHG emissions in its value chain by 52% per service kilometer associated with marketplace rides, within the same timeframe.
Over the last year, Freenow says that 46% of all its trips were taken with ZEV (zero emission vehicles) or hybrid taxis and PHV (private hire vehicle).

The number of zero-emission taxis and PHV increased by 34% in 2023 versus the previous year, it said.
The app added that it now offers the largest number of electric options in capital cities like London and Dublin.
Freenow is one of Europe’s biggest minicab networks and was formed from the merger of brands including Hailo, mytaxi and Kapten, is based in Germany and backed by BMW and Mercedes.
The taxi app recently announced the.return of an initiative in which £1 from every ride will go towards supporting grassroots live music venues.
Other brands to have their emissions targets validated by SBTi include the Co-op and Stagecoach.
