Smurfit Kappa has been ranked as an environmental, social and governance (ESG) leader in the paper packaging industry for the third time in a row, by independent research and analytics firm Morningstar Sustainalytics.
ESG risk ratings are classified across five risk levels: negligible (0-10), low (10-20), medium (20-30), high (30-40) and severe (40+). The research and analytics firm assessed over 14,000 companies worldwide across 42 industries against multiple criteria, including financial strength, circular business practices, and business ethics.
The European packaging company was classified as low risk with a score of 10.7. It achieved both industry and regional top-rated status.

Smurfit Kappa’s ESG risk rating has continued to decrease year-on-year, proving the company’s continued improvement in managing material ESG issues.
The firm’s chief sustainability officer Garrett Quinn said: “We are pleased to receive continued strong ESG Ratings from leading third-party providers, in this instance, from Morningstar Sustainalytics”.
“The year-on-year improvement reflects our ongoing dedication to delivering best-in-class ESG performance for all our stakeholders.”
