Google is set to trial a new scheme which uses AI to reduce the amount of stop and go traffic; the trial is set to begin in Greater Manchester.
The announcement comes as Google hosts its Sustainable with Google event, at which it will provide updates including across high-emission industries like transportation and energy.
“Greater Manchester’s road network – which includes 2,400 traffic signals and accounts for millions of journeys every week — is complex and managing it is a challenge when balancing the needs of motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and public transport users,” said TfGM analysis and reporting manager David Atkin.
“With traffic levels now at or beyond pre-pandemic levels, we are working really hard to tackle congestion and are delighted to be amongst the first areas in the world – and the first in the UK – to work with Google on the innovative Green Light initiative.”

He continued: “The pilot provided valuable insights and teams from both green light and TfGM brought expertise and ideas to the table to improve journeys by up to 18% and reduce emissions”.
