Microsoft adds Scope 3 emission reporting to cloud sustainability platform

Microsoft is adding new Scope 3 emissions reporting capabilities to its Cloud for Sustainability platform, which helps companies record ESG data across their value chains.

The new capabilities will help users prepare for new auditing requirements and will be complimented by capabilities to track progress with Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) requirements.

From this month, a compliance management tool will help companies learn about impending regulations and prepare to collect relevant emissions data, while Microsoft’s Sustainability Manager tool will incorporate data from fifteen Scope 3 categories as well as Scope 1 and 2 (which it already tracks).

The update also includes features like Project ESG Lake, which aims to help businesses predict risk, organise data and integrate AI into their sustainability practises.

Power BI reporting templates that are specifically linked to different ESG targets and reporting models are also set to  help create a visual representation of progress across different metrics.

In a blog post describing the update, Microsoft Cloud for Sustainability general manager Shefy Manayil Kareem said the solution was: “being expanded to give customers fuller visibility into their environmental impact across carbon, water and waste”.

He also said it would help businesses meet new EU regulations, such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, while new capabilities will “help customers create comprehensive ESG data estate and prepare to meet new reporting requirements.”
